The Buddhist Scripture Stone Pillar is located within Kunming Museum (originally a garden park), south of Zhaodong Road, Kunming City, Yunnan Province. There is a vast and brilliant hall. In the center of the hall is the country’s classic archaic sculpture artwork. The tower was constructed by artisans from Dali (937A.D.—1253A.D). Later, the Dizang Temple collapsed and the tower was buried underground for a long time. In 1919, the tower was unearthed from Dizang Temple.
The fine workmanship was marveled at both in the country and overseas and earned the reputation of “the rare and unique artwork”! The Sutra Tower is 6.5 meters high and in hexagon shape. On the base are eight square chairs engraved with eight dragons. Every two dragons formed a pair, dragon head face up sharing a pearl. The tower has high historical and artistic value. The tower is fully chiseled with sutras, so it’s named the sutra tower. The Sutra Tower is the source of precious data and information for the research of ancient Yunnan Buddhism.
