Mengzi County in Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture

Mengzi lies in the southeastern part of Yunnan Province, east of Honghe Prefecture. Its total population is 390,800, 80% agricultural and 58.5% comprising of 19 ethnic minorities. There are two special zones in it –Mengzi Economical Development Zone and Honghe Industrial Park.

Mengzi lies between the watersheds of Zhujiang River and Honghe River. Its highest altitude is 2567.8 m, lowest 146 m. The Tropic of Cancer runs through the county. Its climate is among the Sub-tropical Plateau Monsoon Climates, with average annual temperature 18.6℃, average annual rainfall 815.8 mm, average annual sunshine duration 2234 hours.

Mengzi has significant geographic advantages. It is the key zone linking the Southwestern China with Southeast Asia Peninsula, located 289 km South to Kunming and 168 km north to Hekou Port. In the near future, there will be a new Honghe Airport, as well as a new Honghe Water Transport heading to Haiphong Harbor, Vietnam, which is to be the most convenient international passage in the area.

With a long history over 10,000 years of settlement, and 2100 years as a county, Mengzi, is one of the 24 counties which has existed for over 1000 years. It is of great significance in the contemporary and modern history of Yunnan Province, being the biggest port during the Qing Dynasty, was and having the first customs office, telegraph office, post office, foreign bank, private railway, foreign-invested enterprise, embassy in Yunnan, the first coal plant, etc.. So many firsts came into being here! Mengzi has been the center of commerce, finance, transportation, foreign affairs and revolution in Yunnan for almost the past half-century.

As the No.1 flatland in southern Yunnan, Mengzi is of great potential for business development. Meanwhile, it is also the best place to live in the Tropic of Cancer. It is a good place to develop modern agriculture and biological resources. It is the cradle of “Cross-Bridge Rice Noodles” – holding the name brand “Chinese Famous Snacks” for over 300 years. It is also home of the pomegranate, producing the lovely fruit for over 700 years. Mengzi also boasts a top-ten model branch of agricultural tours. Last but not least, the largest silver mine in China and the largest developing metallurgical bases in the world are located in Mengzi.
