Snow Mountain Music Festival to return to Lijiang
In 2002 Lijiang hosted the Snow Mountain Festival (雪山音乐节), the first large-scale rock festival in mainland China. Yesterday the Snow Mountain Festival organizing committee announced the return of the festival to Lijiang's Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in early October.
When mainland rock trailblazer Cui Jian - and dozens of other musical acts took to a rainy stage five years ago, Western media rushed to christen it 'China's Woodstock', a nickname that drew attention away from the festival's raison d'être - the music.
Now that numerous music festivals have sprung up in Beijing and Shanghai, it seems likely that this time the focus will be on the music.
This year's festival will once again be headlined by Cui Jian and will also feature Zhu Zheqin (朱哲琴), Dao Lang (刀郎), Lao Lang (老狼) and an assortment of local Yunnan bands (including Strange Day and Beekeeper & Horse) plus ethnic minority performers from around Yunnan. Several international rock bands including French band Le Singe Blanc will also perform.
More than 50 bands are expected to perform at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Watch this space as October approaches for more announcements about the festival.
Snow Mountain Music Festival 2007 schedule released
The schedule for the 2007 Snow Mountain Music Festival in Lijiang, which we reported on earlier, has been made public, with Chinese rock legend Cui Jian headlining a diverse roster of performers. The festival will run from October 4 through October 6 and is expected to draw a large crowd during the weeklong national holiday at that time.
In addition to Cui Jian, top Chinese bands including Second Hand Rose, AK-47 and Ruins will also perform. Ethnic minority music will also be highlighted by Naxi performers as well as Mongolian band Hanggai, which performed in several cities in Yunnan in April.
Kunming's music scene will be represented at the festival, with bands Strange Day, Beekeeper & Horse, Nevada Lundemo and the Tribal Moons, Minjian Funk and oNEwAY all playing the second stage at the Shuhe Sifang Tingyin Plaza on the festival's final day. DJs will take the stage and play for several hours each night after the final band performs.
Tickets for the festival cost 80 yuan per day. For more information about the festival, call 86-888-5624026.
