About Laojunshan Mountain
Mainly in structure of volcanic lava, Laojun Mountain has gone through the 4th IA, which left it with many landforms, such as horns, glacial cirques, glacial gorges and glacial lakes. Under the effect of permanent freezing and thawing, rocks covered by the ice are destroyed by cracking, efflorescing and denudating. Chipped rocks swept by melted snow and rain roll down with the water and pile around horns or in gorges. Year after year, they become thicker and thicker and, under gravitation, move down as a whole, forming rock sea, which becomes a special landscape of Laojun Mountain. 
Laojunshan Mountaion area ishas been part of the Three Parallel Rivers Region , which was designated as World's Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO. This mountain region is also diverse in minority groups such as Lisu, Naxi, Pumi , Bai, Yi, etc. May, June and July are good seasons to see wild flowers like rhododendrons in thise mountain area.

 Lijiang Laojun Mountain National Park

The Laojun Mountain goes hundreds of miles in the area with the highest peak of 4240 meters. The special location and complete eco-environment make the mountain hide in fogs all year long which seems quite mysterious. This is the best place for wisdom and souls of the human and let everyone believe that all the most beautiful and amazing phenomena will be genuine here.


The Laojun Mountain is called "the Ancestors of all mountains in southern Yunnan" because people believe that Lao Zi once concocted medicines of immortality here. Rich alpine vegetation, rare plants and animals, a great number of ice lakes, marvelous karsts and colorful cultures and customs of the Naxi, Bai, Lisu, Pumi, Yi and other ethnic groups all make up of the valuable and special scenery of the mountain. People can go sightseeing from three routes in the mountain. From the north, people can see the abundant plants in the nature and the oldest tree in the world, "Xinzhu Holy Tree". In the middle, we can appreciate the great color, including the red canyon of Liming, the Thousand-tortoise Mountain, azalea forest and the Double Lake. Beginning from the south, people can visit the mysterious lakes, the Ninety-nine Dragon Pool in the mountain.
Laojun Mountain Scenic Spot stands in the join of three state-level attractions, namely, Yulong Snow Mountain, Combination of Three Rivers and Cangshan and Erhai. It is one of the main parts of the attraction of "Combination of Three Rivers", the World Natural Heritage, and the main mountain of Yunling stretching in Lijiang, Jianlan and Lanping. Laojun Mountain stretches for hundreds of Li, overlapping and rolling. With its highest peak in elevation of 4,240 m, it is called as the "father of mountains in Yunnan Province" by historians of past dynasties. Its special sight of great value in appreciation and scientific expedition is composed of abundant alp vegetation, rare propagation, numerous glacier lakes, surprising "Danxia" landform and various national customs of Naxi, Bai, Lisu, Pumi and Yi. Experts inside and outside believe that it is one of the places in Yunnan, which own the most beautiful scene, most abundant natural resources and most special national culture, comparable to the famous Huangshi Park of U.S. and Edinburg Botanical Garden.

The main attractions in Laojun Mountain National Park:

99 Dragon Pool

In the eastern side of the north of main ridge of Laojun Mountain, in the lap of the mountain in elevation above 3,800m, there are tens of lakes and swamps, distributing in cluster along the stream, which are called 99 Dragon Pool. Its water comes from the melted snow in spring and rainfall in summer, clear and cold, being of high quality. The overflowed water of the lake gathers together and forms streams, waterfalls and rivers, which flowing through the forest and finally running into Jinsha River and Lancang River. These glacial lakes in various shapes are deep and mysterious, presenting colors of blue, orange, yellow and green through reflecting the shining sun, flowers and trees.

99 Dragon Pool 

Liming Meile Scenic Spot

Located in Liming Village, with "Danxia" Landform formed by red sandstone as its major landscape, Liming Meile Scenic Spot covers 240 sq. km, being the largest and most completely developed Danxia landform. Owning various and colorful cliffs, perilous peaks and limestone caves, it is the most colorful one of numerous sights of Danxia landform in China, in the highest elevation, with greatest difference in height and most clearly layered. Among the attractions, Qiangui Mountain, Liguang Buddha and Niaowang Mountain are unique in the world, which are comparable to Wulingyuan in Hunan.

Laojun Mountain Adventure--4 Days of the Laojun Mountain Hiking tour

The Laojun Mountain scenic area is an important part of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain scenic area. You are recommended to visit the Laojun Mountain in May when the azaleas bloom.


In the morning of the first day, hire a car (landrover is suggested) to drive to the Dragons Resort, with an elevation of 4,000 meters (13,123 feet). The distance is 109 kilometers (68 miles) and it will take you about 4 hours to reach there. Upon arrival, have a short rest and start the hiking. Walk west for about one hour, you will arrive at the famous Ninety-nine Vauclusian Springs. In the valley whose altitude is over 3800 meters (12,467 feet), there are tens of lakes and marshes on the northeast of the main ridge of Laojun Montain. They distribute along the stream, so they are called the Ninety-nine Vauclusian Springs. On the way, you will also see nine boulders. With various shapes, they are shrouded in mystery. The local people call them “Jiuzi Stones”.


Enjoy the splendid landscape of the lakes on the plateau. These erosion lakes of varying size and shapes present gorgeous colors of blue, orange, yellow and green as the sunshine fall on through leaves and petals. Continue to hike for another 1 hour to arrive at the pure, quiet and charming Sister Lake, the Holy Virgin Lake and the Sancai Lake. After having a rest and taking the lunch near the lakes at the altitude of 3890 meters (12,762 feet), head for the Elong Lake. You will spend 4 hours to hike for 6 kilometers (3.7 miles). Stay overnight in the camp on the way.


Continue the hiking in the morning of the second day. Trek for 5 hours and arrive at the Elong Lake with the altitude of 3290 meters (10,793 feet). Take a rest and the lunch beside the lake. Then go on hiking another 5 hours to the Small Bridge. You are supposed to walk for 7.5 kilometers (4.6 miles). Take a car for half an hour to the Liju Village. You can taste the characteristic dinner of Lisu Minority. After diner, you may have a chance to take part in the local campfire party. Stay overnight in the village.


On the third day, take a car from Liju Village for about 17 kilometers (10.6 miles) to the Spun Gold Factory where the gold diggers have ever left their footprints. It will take you about 1.5 hours on the way. After walking and climbing along the path in the virgin forest for about 4 hours, you will arrive at the Observation Station of the Golden Monkey. Accommodate yourself here.


On the last day, starting from the observation station, tramp for 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) to Sancha River. Afterwards, drive for one hour to the Taoyuan Village where the folk houses of Bai Minority gather. You can have your lunch with the local Bai people's family and find out their customs. Continue to drive for 1.5 hours to the Stone Drum Town and the First Bend of the Yangtze River. After visiting, it takes about 1 hour for you to drive back to Lijiang.
