The Buddha image, lying in a cave at the foot of Yunyan Mountain 15 kilometres away from the town in the north, was made in the fourth year of the Kaiyuan era (716 A.D.) during the Tang Dynasty. Xu Xiake's travelogue says, "I am surprised to see a cave with two chambers and two floor levels like this one".
The Temple of Reclining Buddha consisted of 4 halls, with the major one being the back gratto and the rest three deployed sequentially in the front and back yards. The Reclining Buddha lies in the outer chamber, about 15 metres in length and carved with white jade. It is the biggest of its kind in China. Besides, there are sculptures of the Five Hundred Arhats. All of them show the artists' consummate skill.
