Masks play a big role in the wood sculpture art of Yunnan Province, and they can be categorised according to their functions such as totem worshiping, exorcising, opera performing, ceremony holding, and festival celebrating etc. Most masks widely used all over Yunnan are made from wood while some others from paper; and many have outlined with rich regional characteristics.
