Buckwheat Festival of Bailuo Ethnic People in Malipo County,Wenshan

Buckwheat Festival 荞菜节

10 May 2016 in Xinzhai, Malipo County

The Bailuo Yi 白倮彝 are a very small group living on the border of Malipo and Funing County near Xinzhai and Puyang respectively. They wear some of the most elaborate costumes in Yunnan. At the beginning of the fourth lunar month is their annual festival.

The buckwheat festival is the grandest festival of the Bailuo people, who is a branch of the Yi ethnic minority living in Malipo County of Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture.

A local legend goes that in the ancient times, a big fire broke out in a Bailuo ethnic village, torching down all the houses and grains. The villagers were in deep sorrow. All of a sudden, a villager found some grains of buckwheat under a reversed bowl, and then grew them in the fields. Several months later, the buckwheat plants brought a harvest, saving the starving village.

In order to express thanks to the buckwheat, the Bailuo ethnic villagers determined to spend the three-day Buckwheat Festival on the first Dragon Day of the lunar calendar. People always carry out religious ceremonies during the festival to pray for abundant rainfall and god harvests in the future.
